21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the world

Sinigang is a short story written in 2001 by Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran. This narrates how Liza, the main character, dealt with the issue of her father who had an extramarital affair with Sylvia, and consequently had a son, Lem.

The moral lesson that I learned througout the stroy is that:

•We need to be contented. Being contented is a way of being grateful for what we have in our lives. In this story, I learned even more about the essence of being contented.

•Being honest. Honesty is one of the greatest foundation of a family. It is not only about saying the truth but it’s also being true to yourself and others. A family with an honest bond is as strong as a rock.

•Being strong and composed amidst the problem that we encounter. We all know that Liza is a daddy’s girl and she was hurt when she learned that her father cheated, yet she became strong in handling her problems in her family. I can say that she is a strong independent woman which I admired about her.

•Forgiving and moving forward. Forgiving is like freeing ourselves of negative feelings and emotions that we have to other people. It takes time to forgive, but we should never forget the lesson it taught us. We can rebuild what is lost little by little and learn to accept someone who made a mistake. This lesson really taught me to forgive and to let go of my grudges against anyone.

Impact of this story to me as a 21st learner.

The short story sinigang teach me about the importance of having a strong foundation between family members, respecting, being strong, apologizing and forgiving especially to the Filipino families who are experiencing the same issue with ths story.
